Modelling a multi-layer depth filter operated at constant superficial velocity in CADET

Hello CADET community,
I am working on mechanistic modelling of a depth filtration unit and would appreciate guidance on how best to model it in CADET.

The filter is operated at constant velocity (i.e., pressure increases with fouling), and consists of three functional layers arranged in series:

  1. Layer 1 – Front capture zone
o Strong solids (cell debris and cells deposition)
o Rapid fouling and major pressure drop increase with time
  2. Layer 2 – Polishing zone
    o Moderate solids capture
o Moderate pressure drop increases with time
  3. Layer 3 – Adsorptive zone
o Minimal solids deposition (no significant fouling)
o Adsorption of DNA and HCP

I will appreciate your insights.

Hi Kauthar,

What is the intended purpose of this model? Since the flow rate is constant, I assume the goal is to determine the pressure drop. If so, do you actually need dynamic simulations, or would a steady-state calculation be sufficient?
